GDM
GDM is a global plant genetics company specializing in the research, development, commercialization, and distribution of high-yield crop varieties. The company’s genetics account for 45% of the world’s soybean production. The company also invests heavily into corn, wheat, sorghum and sunflowers research and is rapidly expanding its offerings in these crops. The company operates in more than 15 countries, reinforcing its global reach and commitment to agricultural innovation.
GDM has one of the world’s most diverse genetics banks, enabling genetic improvement cycles in under four years through advanced biotechnology.
Scale of field trials
GDM conducts thousands of soy, corn
and wheat trials annually with some of
the larger trials containing over 100,000
plots and several hundred thousand
measurements in a single trial. Each year
the company tests over 1.8 million plots of
soybean alone. Hundreds of field staff
record thousands of photos and millions
of trial observations annually. All of this
data needs to be collected, verified,
consolidated and analyzed as part of
GDM’s efficient R&D cycle.

Before QuickTrials
Before adopting QuickTrials, GDM used
a mix of internal systems and Excel
spreadsheets to record trial data. It was
challenging to manage and required a
lot of communication to ensure each
team used the correct Excel sheet for
each particular trial, especially if
requirements changed mid-trial. At the
end of the season, it was often difficult
and time consuming to consolidate
data from so many excel sheets.

several persistent issues we
had with Excel sheets”

Adopting QuickTrials
GDM switched to QuickTrials more than
4 years ago to streamline its trial operations globally. QuickTrials was the only
solution with the flexibility, scalability,
and specific functionality needed by the
organization. The platform could also
integrate directly with existing systems.
When rolling out the solution there were
some initial challenges around import/-
export of specific data and performance
constraints. The QuickTrials team worked
through these issues until they were
resolved and the process became more
agile and optimal.
QuickTrials is now deeply integrated with
GDM’s tools and processes, resulting in a
very efficient agronomic trialing process
and increased R&D velocity. Enhancements are continually added to further
optimize processes as the company
grows.

Powerful Mobile App Efficiency
Powerful Mobile App Efficiency
Using the QuickTrials Mobile App proved to be 20-30% more efficient than entering data into Excel sheets. This stems from how QuickTrials organizes the data and forms optimally so that field staff can focus on the right thing at the right time without switching back and forth between sheets.

Reliability of data entry
Reliability of data entry
Capturing data with QuickTrials is also more reliable com- pared to the previous solution because there are fewer steps to be performed manually (e.g. transferring and importing excel sheets). QuickTrials automatically uploads captured trial data directly from the mobile app to the QuickTrials Data Warehouse and GDM systems.
Error reduced
Error reduced
Errors have been reduced by more than 50% thanks to the integrations, direct data entry, validation on the mobile app and automatic consolidation of data in QuickTrials. Missing observations are also detected earlier, reducing the number of times a site had to be revisited.

Speed improvements
Speed improvements
The time required to consolidate data from different sites and trials has been dramatically reduced from days to just minutes, as it’s now handled automatically by QuickTrials. Integrations with GDM’s internal systems provide additional efficiencies. This all results in weeks of saved labor each year and an acceleration of the R&D processes

Field Staff Adoption
Field Staff Adoption
As workflows have become more streamlined Field Staff are now enthusiastic about adopting QuickTrials since it makes life easier and speeds up their work. In the past staff were required to use specific tablets and enter data into excel sheets running on those tablet devices. Now with QuickTrials the staff can use either tablet devices or their smart phone to capture observations more efficiently. Being able to use phones is often more convenient and has helped to save travel time and reduce costs.
Data Consistency
Data Consistency
QuickTrials has also helped to improve data consistency among the teams. The GDM Integrations together with the QuickTrials App ensure that breeders all use the same structure and that data is classified consistently. This improves both the data quality and analysis possibilities.

Support
GDM teams feel that support from QuickTrials has been excellent with fast responses and helpful solutions even if a problem is not directly related to QuickTrials. Support is always friendly, professional and solution oriented.
